Mozambique elected to join UN Security Council for the first time

Mozambique has been elected to join the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member in January 2023. The Portuguese-speaking country was unanimously elected following a UN General Assembly election held on Thursday.

To secure a place on the Council, countries must receive a two-thirds majority, or 128 votes, even if they run uncontested.

Candidates this year vied for five seats under three regional groups: two for African and Asia-Pacific countries, one for Latin America and the Caribbean, and two for Western Europe and other States.

The election has now placed Mozambique as one of the African countries to hold one of two seats allowed to African and Asia-Pacific countries. Kenya will be leaving its seat at the end of the year, along with India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway.

Also elected to the council are Ecuador, Japan, Malta and Switzerland, all as nonpermanent members of the 15-nation body. Ten of those nations are determined by the UN membership vote, while the other five are permanent members. They include the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom.

The Security Council consists of 15 countries. Five of them are permanent members with the right to veto.

Gabon and Ghana, with Albania, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates, all will serve the second year of the two-year terms to which nonpermanent member states are elected at the UN Security Council.

The UN said the five new members all ran largely uncontested. Mozambique received 192 votes in securing what will be its first opportunity to sit on the council.

Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, said that his country will try to contribute to building peace in the world, advocating dialogue and multilateralism.
