TECNO renews partnership with UNHCR to boost education for young Africa refugees
Chinese smartphone brand, TECNO late Monday announced the renewal of a partnership with the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR to boost access to quality education among young refugees in Africa.
By supporting UNHCR's flagship Refugee Scholarships Programme called DAFI, TECNO seeks to ensure that young victims of strife in Africa have access to higher education and job opportunities, according to a joint statement from UNHCR and TECNO released in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital on Tuesday.
Vanno Noupech, UNHCR representative in China hailed the renewed partnership with TECNO saying it will ensure young refugee pursue their academic and career dreams uninterrupted.
Noupech added that TECNO's contribution will ensure that young refugees attain higher education and transition to the labor market seamlessly, adding that the Chinese private sector has helped bridge the gap in education access for refugees globally.
A partnership between TECNO and UNHCR that has been in existence since 2020 has ensured that more than 20,0000 refugee children in Africa have access to quality basic education.
The Chinese smartphone brand has made a financial contribution to the Educate A Child (EAC) program domiciled in Kenya and Uganda, to expand learning opportunities for young refugees.
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, TECNO donated tablets and 50,000 medical face masks to support remote learning for refugee children in Kenya during extended school closure.
In addition, TECNO in 2022 also expanded its partnership with UNHCR to cover tertiary education for refugee scholars in Africa besides pledging to provide them with internship opportunities at its branches and subsidiaries in Africa.
Stephen Ha, the general manager of TECNO said that thanks to the renewed partnership with UNHCR, it will be possible to ensure a critical mass of young African refugees have access to basic and tertiary education.
Ha said that TECNO was committed to transforming the lives of communities falling under its areas of operations through support for education in line with the long-held corporate social responsibility ethos.
